Our REU Site, "Advanced Materials and Biochemical Engineering" has several important goals to support undergraduates in their pursuit of research experience.

The five goals of our REU site are:

  1. To provide undergraduates of Chemical Engineering    or allied fields, with unique and exciting research    opportunities in the area of molecular level    modification of surfaces utilizing state of the art    research equipment;
  2. To enhance the participants’ critical thinking and    communication skills;
  3. To spark the participants’ interest in pursuing graduate education;
  4. To introduce the participants’ to "beyond the classroom" experience in a research setting; and
  5. To enhance the participants’ ability to think   independently.

A variety of seminars are provided in the areas of communications, ethics, scientific instrumentation, and graduate studies in support of the above goals. We place special emphasis on recruiting those under-represented in the chemical engineering community.
Through the support of the NSF’s International Program we are currently developing a satellite REU Site at the Mongolian Technical University (MTU) within the Department of Chemical Technology. MTU is located in Ulaanbaatar, the capital of Mongolia. We expect to recruit participants from the US in 2002 for the summer of 2002 program.
